Alicia Keys on Her Son's Rainbow Manicure: "Less Labels, More Expressions"

"You chose it, you liked it, you do it. Who cares what anybody else says?"

Alicia Keys took to Instagram to share her amazing response to her 4-year-old son's insecurities about his fabulous rainbow-hued manicure.

On Sunday, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter ranted about a trip to the nail salon she'd taken with her son Genesis. The toddler excitedly told the manicurist that he wanted "rainbow nails," but after getting his nails painted, he turned to his mom to express some regrets.

"He looked at me and said, 'Mommy, I don't want this on my nails,'" Keys recalled. "And I said, 'Why? You were so sure. You're good.' And he was like, 'People are not gonna like it.'"

"Can you believe this?!" she continued. "Four years old! He's 4, and he already understands the concept that somebody is going to judge him because he chose rainbow colors on his nails."

The "If I Ain't Got You" singer and longtime ally to the LGBTQ community went on to share how she soothed Genesis' fears by praising him for his creativity, and pointing out that plenty of boys wear nail polish. She noted that all of us have "masculine and feminine energies"—and it's deeply concerning to her as a mom that many of us "can't explore these different sides of ourselves" without fear of rejection, harassment, or outright violence.

"You chose it, you liked it, you do it," she added, recalling what she'd told Genesis. "Who cares what anybody else says?"

Keys isn't the only celebrity who has openly supported her child bucking gender norms. While the odd celeb has gone on record to criticize parents who back their trans or gender nonconforming children, Hollywood icons like Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie, and Brad Pitt have all publicly stood up for their gender nonconforming kids.

Media has caught on, too. Roseanne Barr's epic fall from grace notwithstanding, her namesake Roseanne revival featured a gender-creative child. And in the 2018 film A Kid Like Jake, Emmy winners Claire Danes and Jim Parsons starred as the parents of Jake, a gender nonconforming child.
