"Allegiance," Musical Inspired By George Takei's Childhood, Gets Official Broadway Premiere Date

Allegiance, a musical inspired by George Takei's childhood in a U.S. internment camp during WWII, has gotten its officially premiere date on the Great White Way: Takei will make his Broadway debut with the show, slated to open on November 8. Previews will begin October 6.

After a record-breaking run at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego, Allegiance's path to the New York stage became clearer. But with its themes of injustice and racism, it's not your average song-and-dance show. Broadway World calls it "a story you've never heard about a family you will never forget."

Allegiance takes audiences on an emotional journey into a too-often overlooked moment in American history, notes producer Lorenzo Thione, but "does so with both dignity and humor." He adds that "after seeing how audiences reacted to this story in San Diego, we knew we had to get it to Broadway."

Stafford Arima directs Allegiance, with a book by Marc Acito and music and lyrics by Jay Kuo. More casting announcements will be forthcoming.

In 2009, Takei and Tony winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon) held a reading of the show at the Japanese American National Museum in L.A., followed by two more readings in New York with Telly Leung (Glee, Godspell) and other cast members.
