Alvin Ailey Pays Homage to "Moonlight" With Moving Short Film
The iconic Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has created a tribute to the award-winning film Moonlight in the form of a gorgeous ballet sequence.
Alvin Ailey's artistic director Robert Battle teamed up with Moonlight's Academy Award-nominated composer Nicholas Britell to create the film, which features dancers Jamar Roberts, Christopher Taylor and Jeremy T. Villas as the three different stages of the movie's protagonist, Chiron.
Soaked in blue light, the dancers' punctuated movements perfectly encapsulate the tension Chiron feels as he struggles to come to terms with his identity as a queer black man.
It's a stunning tribute and one we'd love to see the theater develop into a full-length ballet.
Moonlight is nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, for Barry Jenkins as well as acting nods for stars Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris.
