Why Did Alyssa Milano Call Herself a Gay Trans Person of Color?

And she didn't stop there, either.

Actor Alyssa Milano stirred up controversy on Twitter over the weekend for labeling herself trans, a person of color, an immigrant, a lesbian, a gay man, and "the disabled." Milano was responding to a question asking if she was trans after she tweeted that on National Women's Day she was celebrating her "transgender sisters."

"I’m everything...Don’t be afraid of what you don’t know or understand," she continued, in her response to the question on her gender identity. "No one wants to hurt you. We are all just looking for our happily ever after."

While she was clearly trying to be an ally to all the groups she named, many took issue with her claiming to be something she is not. Or, rather, multiple things.

You can’t just fake an experience you don’t have. You don’t navigate any space like these groups.

This is the “I don’t see color” approach which is oppression and erasure.

Milano responded to the criticism by attempting to clarify that she was trying to show empathy, and apologizing to those she offended. She then dropped a Rumi quote about becoming what you love.
