Amazon Prime Orders Full Season Of "Transparent," Trans Dramedy With Jeffrey Tambor

Amazon Prime Instant Video is gunning to topple Netflix as the king of original streaming content: The service has expanded its roster today, officially announcing full orders for several programs it has produced pilots for.

Of interest to LGBT viewers is Transparent, a half-hour dramedy about a Los Angeles father (Jeffrey Tambor) who reveals to his ex-wife and grown children that he wants to live as a woman.

TransparentTransparent creator Jill Soloway (Six Feet Under, United States of Tara) told Vulture:

Transitioning your gender is a great metaphor for all the ways our parents don't stay put where we wanted them to be, or our kids don't stay where we want them to be," says Soloway. "I see so many people watching their teenage children transition, their parents transition, their cousins, brothers, and saying "well, you're not the person I remember;" holding onto these ideas of your identity within your family of origin.

And there's so much confusion around what it means to be trans! I feel so excited to be able to tell stories that will illuminate the difference between somebody who may be medically transitioning, or somebody who may be socially transitioning; somebody who's a cross dresser, somebody who's inter gender, somebody who's a butch lesbian, somebody who's a drag queen — all these categories sometimes fall under the umbrella of "trans."

Soloway says Amazon has ordered nine more episodes. No launch date has been announced, so keep at least one sick day available for binge-watching.

Also on Amazon's slate are Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman's comedy Mozart in the Jungle, cop drama Bosch, Chris Carter's new conspiracy drama, The After, and two children’s shows, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street and Wishenpoof.

“We had a tremendous response to Amazon Studios’ latest pilots," says Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios. "In fact, double the number of customers watched these pilots compared to our first season and they posted thousands of heartfelt reviews with pleas for us to continue these shows."
