Amazon's "Transparent" TV Pilot Tackles Transgender Issues: WATCH

Netflix may be dominating the media-streaming service game with hit shows like Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards, but Amazon is looking to create some fierce competition for them with a handful of new shows they are teasing.  The move comes as part of an under-the-radar debut of a handful of pilots for new programming with the potential to be turned into full series with enough viewer support.

One show in particular, though, has caught our eye.  Transparent, from writer/directer/producer Jill Soloway (Six Feet Under, The United States of Tara), is a comedic drama about a trans woman coming out late in life.  Her dysfunctional family is predictably flummoxed.

Soloway spoke to The Advocate about the new endeavor:

Even though the show has the word ‘trans’ in the title, I don’t necessarily want people to look at it as the definitive show about a trans person ... For me, the show is more of an exploration of family, much in the same way Six Feet Under was about a family’s relationship to death. The show was inspired by the idea of rather [than] being about a parent dying in the first scene, which is what Six Feet Under was about, would instead be about a parent being born in the first scene. What would it mean to children who were expecting to inherit a legacy of money or real estate to instead inherit a legacy of ‘genderqueerness’? To me, the show is really about a queer family, and within the queer family, there’s the father who is coming out as transgender.

Transparent stars Jeffrey Tambor as the titular character.  Gaby Hoffmann, Jay Duplass, Amy Landecker, and Judith Light costar as supporting characters, each dealing with different kinds of queerness.  The pilot is now available for free screening and review through the end of February on Amazon.com.
