Watch Queer ASL Interpreter Amber Galloway Gallego Rock Out With The Red Hot Chili Peppers

A true American hero!

A clip of American Sign Language interpreter (and part-time rockstar) Amber Galloway Gallego performing alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis is circulating online this week, highlighting the importance of accessibility for people with disabilities.

You may recognize Galloway Gallego from the 2013 video of her interpreting for Kendrick Lamar, which went viral after a Buzzfeed post showered her with praise for her incredible work.

In the clip below, which garnered more than 20,000 shares in less than a week, she’s rocking out with the same emotional vigor she did before, but this time with the spotlight on her.

Galloway Gallego explained in a 2014 interview with OutSmart magazine that her craft is unique — while many ASL interpreters at concerts translate words without expression, she tries to deliver an experience equal to the one hearing concertgoers are having.

“I memorize all the songs, and I figure out what they’re trying to say, and I change it into ASL. Then I bring the message and its equivalent to where [deaf audience members] experience everything on the same level as all the hearing people,” she said.

“That’s what interpretation is supposed to be. I see them jamming along with all their hearing counterparts, and that makes everything worth it—all the countless hours that I can’t bill for and can’t get paid for.”

Today, Galloway Gallego owns and operates Amber G Productions, a company designed to train ASL superstars like herself to carry on the legacy.

Asked about the response she got from hearing people at the beginning of her career, Galloway Gallego said: “They really didn’t even realize that music has so many layers to it, and all the different rhythms that come about. So many interpreters base their interpretations [solely] off the words. That’s not what moves us and evokes [an emotional response] when we listen to music.”
