Less Than 2% Of Americans Identify As Gay Or Lesbian

A new report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention notes that just 1.6% of adults identified as gay or lesbian; 0.7% identified as bisexual and the remaining 1.1% are either “something else,” confused, or refuse to let the government pry even further into their personal lives.

That means an overwhelming 96.6% of American adults are confirmed heterosexuals, a number higher than previously thought—even if you discount Alfred Kinsey's questionable 10% figure. Demographer Gary Gates put the number of LGBT American adults at about 3.8% in 2011.

Of course, it’s difficult to know exact numbers since so many LGB people are not open about their orientation—certainly to surveyors. This is the first time the NHIS has included sexual orientation in a questionnaire in its 57-year history.

More than 34,000 adults were polled to determine “differences in health-related behaviors, health status, health care service utilization, and health-care access by sexual orientation.”

Among the survey’s other findings, is the groundbreaking news that gays loves to drink:

“[A] higher percentage of adults aged 18–64 who identified as gay or lesbian, or bisexual had five or more drinks in one day in the past year and were current cigarette smokers compared with adults aged 18–64 who identified as straight..."

And while you might rightly assume gay men are more likely to get an HIV test than our breeder brethren, we're also more likely to get a flu shot.
