“American Gods” Has The “Hottest Gay Sex Scene Ever Put On TV”

"I’m watching it, and I appear to be watching the best gay porn I’ve ever watched."

Bryan Fuller’s American Gods was already one of the most anticipated TV events of the spring and now viewers have another reason to be excited—the series will contain one of the most graphic gay sex scenes ever shown on television.

The Starz series, based on Neil Gaiman’s novel, follows a man named Shadow (Ricky Whittle) who travels across America with a stranger, Wednesday (Ian McShane), who has hired him as a bodyguard because he is actually the Norse god Odin.

The two embark on a quest to collect other old gods who have incorporated themselves into everyday America for a battle against new gods like technology and media.

American Gods premiered April 30 on Starz, but there is already buzz about a sex scene in the third episode. The intense gay sex scene in that episode is between the jinn (Mousa Kraish), an ifrit from the Middle East who is posing as a taxi driver in New York, and Salim (Omid Abtahi), a young Muslim man who just moved to the city.

“We both cited Salim and the jinn as one of the most memorable, touching romantic chapters of the novel,’ executive producer Fuller, who is out, told Vice.

“And so, we took great care and were very deliberate in how we brought that to life so it reflected the romance of the novel,” Fuller added. “We also added a few notions about a particular gay experience, coming from a man who originates from a country where you can be thrown off a rooftop for being gay.”

In a separate interview with Vice, Gaiman reflected on writing the intense sex scene between two Muslim men years ago, but never thought that it would make it to the screen when the novel was adapted for TV.

“They say they’re going to do this, but obviously that’s not what they’re going to do,” said Gaiman. “But then I’m watching it, and I appear to be watching the best gay porn I’ve ever watched. My sampling of gay porn is basically just this, but I’m watching it and I can’t believe they’re doing it. You feel like boundaries are being pushed, and that makes me very proud.”

“The jinn comes into Salim’s life to say, ‘It’s OK to be who you are,’ ” Kraish told Out. “Now more than ever that story is incredibly powerful. The sex scene is so intense and intimate. I don’t think anything like it has ever occurred on TV.”

“[It] was not a small feat for two gay Muslim characters to have a beautiful, sophistical, sexual experience and what it was like for us to visually give you an idea of what it’s like to take a god inside you,” said Fuller at a recent press event. “I felt like it was a wonderful metaphor for a religious experience.”

Below, read an excerpt from the scene in the American Gods novel:

The taxi driver comes out of the shower, wet, with a towel wrapped about his midsection. He is not wearing his sunglasses, and in the dim room his eyes burn with scarlet flames.
Salim blinks back tears. “I wish you could see what I see,” he says.
“I do not grant wishes,” whispers the ifrit, dropping his towel and pushing Salim gently, but irresistibly, down onto the bed.
It is an hour or more before the ifrit comes, thrusting and grinding into Salim’s mouth. Salim has already come twice in this time. The jinn’s semen tastes strange, fiery, and it burns Salim’s throat.
In the morning, Salim his belongings are gone, and only the Jinn’s taxi keys and ID remain. He then begins his new life as a taxi driver.

Set those DVRs: the episode with the scene between the jinn and Salim will air May 14 on Starz.
