FX has released the opening credits of American Horror Story: Cult and, as promised, it’s definitely got a political slant. As a patriotic remix of the opening instrumentals play, we see a hidden figure don a Donald Trump mask, and another in a Hillary Clinton disguise. (There’s also shots of George Washington and an American flag dripping with blood.)
But Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk never go minimalist, so the credits also play up the apian imagery seen in earlier promos (bees swarming the ground, crawling out of someone’s skin) as well as gruesome clowns and a magician pulling a bloody lump out of a hat.
At the recent Television Critics Association summer tour, producer Alexis Martin Woodall said that current politics would serve as a launch point for Cult, though, the season itself will dig more into “what’s going on in our world around us, the idea of paranoia.”
The credits reveal Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Cheyenne Jackson as well as new arrivals Billie Lourd and Alison Pill. It’s also been confirmed Colton Haynes, Lena Dunham, Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, Mare Winningham, Chaz Bono, Adina Porter and Billy Eichner will be in the cast.
American Horror Story: Cult premieres September 5 on FX.
