"American Horror Story" Season 5 Will Be "Very Different"

It seems a bit redundant for anyone associated with alt-television wiz kid Ryan Murphy to proclaim that American Horror Story, a show that changes plot and setting every season, will be reinventing itself for it's next iteration. Like, duh! Isn't that the whole point?

Anyway, that's precisely what FX CEO John Landgraf has gone and done. At the TCA winter press tour, Landgraf gave various nebulous hints about how the next incarnation of everyone's favorite carnival of grotesqueries will be "very different." From an interview with TV Line:

I know what it is, but I can’t [say]. I have to let Ryan do his thing on that. But it’s very different ...

One of the things I love so much about that is that it can be radically, radically reinvented in terms of tone, setting, period, characters, cast ... I think there’s going to be an unusually large reinvention in between Book 4 and Book 5 relative to, say, between Book 3 [Coven] and 4 [Freak Show].

Sure. Whatever. Isn't that what they say every season? I mean, will the show still feature way too many characters entangled in elaborate psuedo-Shakespearian ultra-violent revenge plots? Probably! Will the season's themes and motifs be unsubtly laid out in heavy-handed and ham-fisted dialogue within the first fifteen minutes of the first episode? Almost certainly! Will we all keep watching anyway because it's god damn captivating? Of course!

The only other hint dropped during the interview was that the next season will probably return to a present-day setting, as has been done with all of the odd-numbered seasons of the show (which, to be honest, is something I hadn't noticed before).

Speculation abounded as to whether the show's matriarch, Jessica Lange, will be returning. The actress has said numerous times that she would not be coming back, yet many are choosing not to believe her. Landgraf had this to say on the issue:

Ryan is really, really independent in how he makes these shows and what he does. So I know the setting, I know something about the characters and something about the tone and the time period, but I don’t actually know the cast yet.

Murphy has previously stated that the show's next theme has been hinted at numerous times during the current run. Many fans have picked up some clues, with the leading fan-theory assuming that Season 5 will deal in some way with government conspiracies, secret scientific experiments, and Nazism a la Operation Top Hat.
