Gay Israeli Pop Star Drowns Trying To Save Niece

Amir Fryszer Guttman spent the week fighting for equal rights for gay couples looking to adopt children.

Israeli pop star and LGBT activist Amir Fryszer Guttman died this week after saving his 9-year-old niece from drowning while on vacation.

The 41-year-old, who first rose to fame as a member of the Israeli boy band High Five, was one of the first celebrities in his country to come out as gay. He later married his long-time partner and they adopted a son together.

Guttman was currently fighting the Israeli government's decision to prioritize straight couples over gay couples when it comes to adopting children, using his family as an example of how healthy a family with same-sex parents can be.

The pop star was on vacation with his family over the weekend when he noticed his niece struggling in the water. He dove in to help her, lifting her in the air to safety while he remained down below the waves.

When they were pulled to shore by a group of surfers, the young girl was okay, but Guttman had stopped breathing. He was pronounced dead due to organ failure at a nearby hospital later that day.
