Did Amy Grant Include Same-Sex Couples In "Say It With A Kiss" Music Video?

The singer may have picked vague images to keep her religious fans happy.

Christian singer Amy Grant has spent much of her career balancing her religious beliefs with her support of the LGBT members of her fanbase, and her latest music video may be another example of the singer walking the line between acceptance and avoidance of the issue.

Grant just released the video for her single "Say It With A Kiss," and it's filled with images of diverse couples kissing and embracing in order to send a message of unity and inclusivity. But The Advocate is pointing out that it's hard to decipher whether an image of a woman kissing another woman on the cheek is showcasing a romantic couple or simply two friends or siblings in a happy moment.

While the image of the two women may be unclear, a photo that features two men later on in the video seems to more obviously represent a gay couple. But when The Advocate reached out for confirmation as to whether or not they purposely chose to include same-sex couples in the video, the vague response from Grant's manager, Jennifer Cooke, was a reminder that the singer risks alienating a large portion of her fanbase by openly embracing equality.

“Although there are a handful of personal photos from Amy (and I even snuck in a couple of my kids), the rest of the images are stock photos and not people we actually know personally,” Cooke explained. “That said, we chose photos that we believed would make everyone feel included.”

It makes sense that the Christian crossover artist has to keep her support subtle—the singer faced backlash from fans after doing her first gay press interview with PrideSource back in 2013.

"I know that the religious community has not been very welcoming, but I just want to stress that the journey of faith brings us into community, but it's really about one relationship," she said in the interview. "The journey of faith is just being willing and open to have a relationship with God. And everybody is welcome. Everybody."

Despite keeping her answers vague, many of her religious fans, as well as the Christian media, were upset that she seemed supportive of the LGBT community. The Southern Baptist retailer LifeWay Christian Resources recently refused to sell her latest holiday album, Tennessee Christmas, because it reportedly wasn't Christian enough, but many wonder if it had anything to do with the controversy over her giving an interview to a gay news outlet.
