Amy Winehouse's Father Speaks Out In Opposition Of New Documentary: "Amy Would Be Furious"

Just weeks shy of its Cannes special screening debut, the new documentary Amy–about the life of late singer Amy Winehouse–is being publicly slammed by the Winehouse family.

A statement was released this morning by Winehouse's father Mitch, reading:

They feel that the film is a missed opportunity to celebrate her life and talent and that it is both misleading and contains some basic untruths.

The narrative is formed by the testimony of a narrow sample of Amy’s associates, many of whom had nothing to do with her in the last years of her life.

By misunderstanding the condition and its treatment, the film suggests for instance that not enough was done for Amy, that her family and management pushed her into performing or did not do enough to help her.

Mitch, a taxi driver, also spoke with The Sun, telling them "I felt sick when I watched it for the first time. Amy would be furious. I am painted as being an absent father during her last years. It gives the impression the family weren’t there."

Continuing to speak out–to the point of raised eyebrows–Mr. Winehouse began to lay into Amy's ex Blake Fielder-Civil. "Blake is saying in the film that the reason Amy was like that was because of me–not because he gave her crack and heroin and because he completely manipulated and coerced her into Class A drugs."

Continuing his press tour, Mitch spoke with BBC radio asserting that he would sue for damages if the cut screened at Cannes in any way misrepresented him or his family.

Director Asif Kapadia and his team responded to Mitch's initial statement claiming the filmmakers had the "full backing of the Winehouse family" and approached the project with "total objectivity."

“During the production process, we conducted in the region of 100 interviews with people that knew Amy Winehouse; friends, family, former partners and members of the music industry that worked with her," they said. "The story that the film tells is a reflection of our findings from these interviews."
