Anderson Cooper Will Be First Openly Gay Person To Moderate A Presidential Debate

Cooper will host the second debate alongside ABC's Martha Raddatz.

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced today that NBC's Lester Holt, ABC's Martha Raddatz, Fox News' Chris Wallace, CBS' Elaine Quijano and CNN's Anderson Cooper will moderate the presidential and vice presidential debates this fall.

This marks the first time that an openly gay person has ever been selected to act as a moderator for a presidential debate.

Lester Holt will moderate the first debate on September 26 at Hofstra University in New York.

Cooper and Raddatz will then host a town-meeting style debate on October 9 at Washington University in St. Louis. The questions will be posed by citizens based on topics "of broad public interest as reflected in social media and other sources."

Many social media users have come out to praise the commission's pick of Cooper, including the CNN host's BFF Andy Cohen, who jokingly tweeted: "Excited that Anderson Cooper is finally going to see what it's like to host a Real Housewives Reunion!"

For its part, the Commission stated: "These journalists bring extensive experience to the job of moderating, and understand the importance of using expanded time periods effectively. We are grateful for their willingness to moderate and confident that the public will learn more about the candidates and the issues as a result."
