As the weather turns a little colder here in the East Coast, everyone’s mind wanders off to thoughts of a tropical vacation with plenty of sandy beaches, a flurry of mai tais….and some thrift store shopping?
When in Honolulu recently, we caught up with Project Runway alum Andy South (who now goes by the name Nong Ariyaphon Southiphong) because there is no better person to question about where to go in a city you don’t know than a local. During our sit down in her new atelier in Honolulu’s increasingly chic Chinatown, she talked openly about her gender transition but also gave us her tips on the best shopping and — of course — beaches all over the island of Oahu.
Her Oahu/Honolulu recommendations include:
Collins & 8th — Shop featuring all the hot designers from Hawaii — including Andy South
Jackass Ginger — Local watering hole where locals go to swim
Lanikai Beach — Best beach in the area (sorry Waikiki), hike down from Pill Boxes.
Barrio — A downtown Honolulu vintage clothing shop she loves.
Watch the video above to get all the details on her tips.
And if you’re thinking about planning a trip to Honolulu — or really anywhere in Hawaii — give our very gay-friendly travel booking partners, Orbitz, a try.
