Angela Bassett To Direct Whitney Houston Biopic For Lifetime

I, much like anyone with a heart, am clearly not over the death of Whitney Houston. So the news of a biopic -- a Lifetime made for TV movie at that, Miss Gurl -- about the late chanteuse only two years after her death would normally fill me with a toxic combination of hatred, pain, sadness, rage and doubt. Hasn't Bobbi Kris suffered enough? But then you throw Angela Bassett into the mix and suddenly I'm on board.

The Oscar nominee and real-life Marie Laveau will direct the film, tentatively -titled Whitney Houston. (I guess they decided not to go with my proposed title, BOOOBBBBYYYYYY!!! )

The biopic is set to premiere next year, according to Entertainment Weekly:

Whitney Houston chronicles the headline-making relationship between the iconic singer, actress, producer and model, and singer, songwriter Bobby Brown — from the time they first met at the very height of their celebrity, to their courtship and tumultuous marriage.  Throughout it all, difficulties followed the superstar couple while they dealt with the overwhelming rewards and consequences of the fame and fortune created by Whitney’s meteoric rise that would soon overshadow them both.”

Added Bassett: “I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story. Their humanity and bond fascinates us all.  I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world.”

Houston and Bassett shared the screen in 90s you-go-girl classic, Waiting to Exhale, which gave us not only one of the greatest soundtracks of the decade, but also one of the greatest moments in cinematic fucking history:

Bassett will not star as the titular legend, probably because she didn't feel like making What's Love Got to Do With It 2, but she may have another part in the film. Even though this will mark the actress's directorial debut, she's gotta do better than that Liz Taylor trainwreck starring that Lindsay Lohan trainwreck. Now let's all start speculating as to who will step into the diva's shoes.* Lace up, ladies, you've got some runs to do.

* Ed. Note: Not Jennifer Hudson.
