Annie Potts Is Ready For A "Designing Women" Reboot—And So Are We

"[We] could use a show like 'Designing Women'—feisty, smart women that didn’t take any B.S. from anybody."

Annie Potts says she's totally down for a Designing Women revival, especially in the era of #MeToo and Donald Trump.

The Young Sheldon star opened up to EW about bringing back the beloved CBS series, which ran from 1986 to 1993 and tackled a variety of hot-button issues, from abortion to homophobia. ("Killing All The Right People," a Season 2 episode, addressed the prejudice surrounding people with HIV/AIDS and scored the series two Emmy nominations.)

"Every Monday night was a #MeToo moment for us, and we were talking about it," said Potts, who played designer and silent partner Mary Jo Shiveley. "We were very political."

It might take some creativity to bring the show back, given the passing of stars Dixie Carter and Meshach Taylor. And Potts admitted she wasn't sure how she'd find the time to shoot a reboot.

But, she insists, the show is more relevant than ever. "[We] could use a show like Designing Women—feisty, smart women that didn’t take any B.S. from anybody."

"I’m sad that there’s not such a strong voice, I don’t think, in any singular show," Potts, 65, added. "Nobody is doing what we did then. So yeah, if [creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason] wanted to write six episodes and do it in my hiatus, I would be there in a minute."

Reboots are having a moment on the small screen, with Will & Grace and Roseanne back and garnering enviable ratings.

The surviving Designing Women cast last reunited at the ATX Television Festival in 2017. Below they, and creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, discuss the show at a Paley Center panel in 2006.
