Another Gay Teen Commits Suicide After Years Of Bullying

We might think things are changing, but gay teens are still taking their own lives: A New Mexican high-schooler was removed from life support this week after a suicide attempt on Saturday. Beforehand Carlos Vigil, 17, tweeted he had been suffering from bullying at school. “The kids in school are right, I am a loser, a freak and a fag and in no way is that acceptable for people to deal with.”

In a letter written shortly before he killed himself Carlos, 17, wrote:

Vigil's folks say harassment had long been a problem for their son, and he even transferred schools to get away from bullies.  They had plead with representatives to pass stronger anti-bullying bills. “My son, he didn’t deserve this,” said mom Jacqueline Vigil. “He is not here because of bullying. It drove him over the edge.”

Research shows that 60% of youth who need mental health care don't get it, and that the risk of suicide attempt goes up for LGBT youth considerably because there is even less support from family, schools and the community. To find out how you can help, contact the Trevor Project.
