Anthony Rapp Can't Believe He's Going To Be On "Star Trek: Discovery"

"It’s kind of crazy that I get to be a part of something that means so much to so many people."

CBS is revving up for Star Trek: Discovery—the first new Trek series in 12 years, and the first ever to include an LGBT character from its inception.

Anthony Rapp will play Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist—or “fungus expert"—aboard the USS Discovery.

"I’m honored. I’m also honored to be a part of a piece of work that’s part of the cultural pantheon," the out actor told Metro Weekly.

"It’s kind of crazy that I get to be a part of something that means so much to so many people. It meant a lot to me, too. I’m thrilled and I’m honored to be the vehicle for this aspect of the story that’s being told."

Pressed for details about his character, Rapp was wisely mum.

"I can say that I’m in it, and that I’m really excited about it. I pretty much am not allowed to say anything else. I don’t even know if I’m allowed to say that. It’s so profoundly under wraps, which I completely understand and actually endorse. But I’m really excited."

In June, out producer Bryan Fuller said fans hoping for a gay character “would be happy” with Discovery.

“We want to carry on what Star Trek does best, which is being progressive,” Fuller, who has since left the show, explained. “It’s fascinating to look at all of these roles through a colorblind prism and a gender-blind prism.”

Also joining the cast is Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Rainsford of the Discovery, actor Doug Jones (Hellboy, Falling Skies) as Lt. Saru,a member of a new alien species that hasn’t been seen in the Star Trek universe before, and Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou of the Starship Shenzhou and TK as . Still to be announced is the captain of the Discovery itself, though CBS has revealed it will be a woman.

Star Trek: Discovery is set to premiere in May on CBS Access.
