Watch Anthony Rapp's First Scene As Lt. Stamets On "Star Trek: Discovery"

He's not here to make friends.

Star Trek: Discovery blasted off last week, and on the most recent episode Anthony Rapp's character, Lt. Stamets, made TV history as the first openly gay character on a Star Trek series.

In this weekend's episode, "Context Is King," Stamets meets disgraced Starfleet officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green)—and he does not have time for her.

In the scene Stamets and Burnham have a tense exchange about Burnham's Vulcan heritage, and ends with Stamets sending her off on an assignment.

“I’m really excited and happy when a gay character is a part of a story — especially when a gay character is created in a complex and human and non-stereotypical, interesting way, and that has certainly been the case with Stamets,” Rapp told Entertainment Weekly.

“And you get to see his relationship. There was a little glimpse [of a relationship with] Sulu in Beyond, and it was a nice nod. But in this case, we actually get to see me with my partner in conversation, in our living quarters, you get to see our relationship over time, treated as any other relationship would be treated.”

Later in last night's episode Stamets get in on the action when his team boards the Discovery's sister ship, USS Glenn, to find a group of Klingons who have been killed by a terrifying alien creature.

In the episode Stamet's sexuality is never addressed, and his better half, medical officer Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) has yet to be introduced in the series.

“Our work intersects sometimes and that can create some challenges for our relationship. All of that stuff is just part of the fabric of it,” Rapp recently explained to CBS News. “The fact that we are two men in a relationship is not the focal point of any story.”
