GOP Superstar Ben Carson Cracks Joke About Poisoning Gay Wedding Cakes

At the Iowa Freedom Summit, conservative superstar (and GOP presidential hopeful) Ben Carson "joked" that same-sex couples shouldn't want religious conservatives baking them wedding cakes because they might "put poison in that cake."

The press was not amused, and neither are we.

After the Summit—warmup for right-wing candidates to throw their hat in the presidential ring—Carson met with the press and explained his frustration with public-accomodation laws that trump "religious liberty":

What I have a problem with is when people try to force people to act against their beliefs because they say 'they're discriminating against me.'

So they can go right down the street and buy a cake, but no, let's bring a suit against this person because I want them to make my cake even though they don't believe in it. Which is really not all that smart because they might put poison in that cake."

According to The Hill, Carson's staff chuckled about the joke but the press remained dead silent.

Before becoming a conservative pundit, Carson was a successful neurosurgeon—the first to successfully separate conjoined twins joined at the head, but has publicly denied the theory of evolution.

He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2008.
