Apple Quietly Fixes Programming "Glitch" That Made Russian Siri Homophobic

Apple quietly fixed a homophobic glitch in the Russian version of Siri Monday, apparently in response to users who noticed the computerized "personal assistant" had some pretty strong feelings about gays.

The bug made headlines this week after Alex, a Russian living in the UK, posted his findings to YouTube.

In the video below titled "In Soviet Russia Siri questions you," Alex explains the newly-released Russian Siri had been programmed — in a way that's uniquely Apple — to recognize the word "gay" as an expletive.

The video shows Russian Siri responding to any questions that included the word "gay" with, "You are so rude." When Alex asks Siri if there are any gay clubs nearby, the voice responded, "I would have turned red if I could."

In addition, Siri told Alex "I will pretend I haven't heard that," when he asked how to register a gay marriage in England. When he asked, "Is gay marriage normal," she replied, "I believe this emotion should be considered negative."

Russian Siri miraculously changed her attitude after Alex's video went viral. On Tuesday, Alex joined reporters at The Telegraph and BuzzFeed in noting that the "glitch" had been updated and provided actual answers to the "gay" questions previously asked.

According to Buzzfeed, "a company source claimed that the issue was the result of a bug...that was subsequently fixed." Apple, which is generally seen as a champion for LGBT rights, did not respond to Buzzfeed for comment.
