"Archie Comics" Gang Ditches Planned Trip To Russia Over Anti-Gay Laws

archie meets gleeDan Parent, artist and write for Archie Comics, told Back2Stonewall that the current gay-rights crisis in Russia will find its way into an upcoming issue of one of the Riverdale gang's comics.

Parent, who added gay teen Kevin Keller to the long-running family-friendly comic, was speaking at the Word Wizard Comic-Con in Chicago when he was asked about the human-rights issue in the former Soviet Union:

“I’ve just been catching up on it—It’s really upsetting... Russia should be boycotted, so much so that actually in an upcoming special four-issue story arch I’m writing, the Archie gang are going to take a world tour to four countries. Russia was to be one of them.  But they’re not going there now. They just can’t and  they won’t. They love and support Kevin.”

Parent has repeatedly stood up for the LGBT community, facing down boycotts by One Million Moms and other mouthbreathers when he introduced Keller in Veronica #202. Of course, he's no fool either: That issue became the first  Archie comic book to sell out in the publisher's 70-year history.
