An Archie Comics Character Comes Out As Asexual

"For the stories it's good to have someone not mired in the hormonal teen romances, and it adds to that 'outside-looking-in' quality," says writer Chip Zdarsky.

Archie loves Betty. Veronica loves Archie. Reggie loves Veronica and Jughead loves... hamburgers?

That's how it's been for the last 75 years of Archie comics, but now there might be a reason Jughead rarely seems to have any interest in the girls (or boys) of Riverdale High.

In Jughead Number 4, out this week, it's revealed Archie's best pal is asexual.

Below, Kevin Keller (Archie Comic's first gay character) complains about his lack of romantic prospects, and reveals Jughead's asexuality.

It's the latest in a series of bold moves the company has made, including introducing Keller and rebooting their flagship title, Archie, with Archie Andrews as a wholesome ginger hottie.

"For the stories it's good to have someone not mired in the hormonal teen romances, and it adds to that 'outside-looking-in' quality," Jughead writer Chip Zdarsky, told ComicBook.com.

"I'm writing him as asexual, but this is comics: The next writer could make him discover girls or boys, or both, and that's totally fine... For me though, I like an asexual Jughead."

Jughead No.4 hits stands this Wednesday. Below, view more pages from the issue,(courtesy of Comic Book Resources.
