The Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin, announced that she is currently developing a line of food products that, perhaps unintended, will no doubt rival fellow diva-turned-entrepreneur, Ms. Patti LaBelle.
And she’s not shy about the comparisons, telling Detroit’s Local News 4 Today that despite not trying LaBelle’s sweet potato pies, “Ms. Patti’s gonna have to move that pie to the side!”
Franklin says she’s met with a food group based in Phoenix to start developing her food products, which she says will expand beyond just pies to include her chili, gumbo and “baked chicken in dressing in a loaf pan.”
Like most successful female artists, the two have long been pitted against one another despite them both vocalizing their affections for one another.
Despite this clip wreaking of shade…
… the pair assert that there’s no beef.
In a 2014 New York Magazine profile, LaBelle said of Franklin, “She’s the queen of the world, as far as music, to me,” even adding: “I love her.”
After a satire website posted a story about LaBelle being arrested and charged with assault for trying to deck Aretha Franklin, Franklin issued a statement saying, “Patti and I are cool and we always have been. I enjoyed her at the White House. Classic Patti.”
No word on when Franklin’s foods will hit the market, but we’ll be sure to do a taste test as soon as they hit the market.
