Meet the Logo30: Ashlee Marie Preston

The transgender activist believes in doing whatever it takes to be heard and to get liberated.

Every day during the month of June, we will be spotlighting our 2018 Logo30. The powerful series profiles ordinary and extraordinary people who show pride in unique and provocative ways. Visit the Logo30 homepage to learn more about the series.

Transgender activist and host Ashlee Marie Preston knows that liberation doesn’t come from “asking kindly.” Preston came to broader public attention last year for calling out The Breakfast Club’s Charlamagne Tha God in the wake of a guest, comedian Lil Duval, saying he would kill a trans woman if he found out her identity after sex.

“Many people who know me in the community refer to me as the trans Malcolm X, because I believe it’s ’by any means necessary,'” she tells NewNowNext. “Whatever you need to do to be heard, then that’s what you need to do.”

“The cheesiest, stupidest thing I’ve ever heard is, ’What is going on with America? This is not who we are.’ It is exactly who we are. We were built on slavery, and genocide, and the oppression of marginalized people, and all of these different things that America has swept under the rug for so many generations. So to be able to talk about that is uplifting and empowering. Because although it’s going to get worse before it gets better, you can’t heal what you don’t reveal, and I think that we’re finally entering that healing process.”
