Ask the Expert: "I’m fair-skinned. Which SPF should I wear?"

Q: If I’m fair-skinned, which SPF should I wear if I want to get some color, but not turn my skin to leather?

A: It’s hard not to get a little color in the summer with all the extra time spent outdoors during warmer months. That said, it is still important to try to avoid sun over-exposure altogether.

Fair skin is especially more susceptible to burning, so opt for broad spectrum facial sunscreens with a high level of SPF, and apply them at least 30 minutes before you go outside. If you break a sweat or swim, be sure to reapply.

Another alternative that you may want to look into for a hint of color is self-tanner or tinted moisturizer. This is a growing category for men in particular, and as someone with somewhat fair skin myself, I am a fan of this tanning option.

When selecting a product of this nature, the key word is GRADUAL. You want a product that will build color slowly over time. If you go this route, be sure to exfoliate regularly.
