The Assassination of Gianni Versace, FX’s highly anticipated second installment of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series, American Crime Story, finally has a premiere date: Wednesday, January 17, 2018.

The date was announced at the end of a trippy new teaser trailer featuring a Speedo-clad Darren Criss creeping up on Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez) as he lounges by the pool, and is suddenly awakened by the man behind him.

The limited series stars Ramirez as Gianni Versace, Penelope Cruz as his sister, Donatella Versace, Darren Criss as Versace’s killer, Andrew Cunanan, and Ricky Martin as Versace’s partner, Antonio D’Amico.

“I think we’ve been very respectful to his [Versace’s] family, particularly. Donatella had some requests about how the children were depicted in the show,” said executive producer Ryan Murphy. “I listened to that. As a father, I understood. I wasn’t interested in going there, out of respect for her.”

The season is based on Maureen Orth’s account of the murder in Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History. Murphy admits the designer’s family may not love everything they see.

“I think that the Versaces will like some of what we do, and I think that some of it they will be uncomfortable about. And I understand that. But we’re going off a book, and other reporting that we’ve done. I think [the show] is moving. I think it’s powerful.”

The real D’Amico—who is being played by Ricky Martin—spoke out about the problems he has with Martin’s portrayal of him in the series.

“There has been so much written and said about the murder, and thousands of suppositions, but not a trace of reality,” D’Amico told The Observer.

“The picture of Ricky Martin holding the body in his arms is ridiculous,” he added. “Maybe it’s the director’s poetic license, but that is not how I reacted.”

D’Amico recalls that he was in Versace’s mansion when he heard the gunshots. “I felt as if my blood had turned to ice,” he said. D’Amico went out to investigate with their butler.

“The house had stained glass windows so we couldn’t see what had happened from inside, so we had to open the gate. I saw Gianni lying on the steps, with blood around him. At that point, everything went dark. I was pulled away, I didn’t see any more.”
