Attorney Says He Was Fired From Top U.S. Law Firm For Supporting LGBT Rights

A lawsuit claims one partner also remarked about the plaintiff's mannerisms and appearance.

A Pennsylvania attorney is alleging he was fired from one of the top firms in the country because he advocated for LGBT rights.

In a lawsuit filed last week, Alfred Zaher claims he was terminated from his position as a partner in the intellectual-property division of Blank Rome after he hosted an event for LGBT lawyers.

Zaher says he was axed after Chairman and Managing Partner Alan J. Hoffman expressed disapproval that Zaher invited 70 LGBT Philadelphia attorneys for a gathering at Blank Rome's Philadelphia offices.

The lawsuit also claims that Hoffman made disparaging comments about Zaher’s appearance and mannerisms.

It also alleges that the chair of the intellectual property team told Zaher's clients he was leaving because of "ethical issues."

Blank Rome denies the allegations, telling Law360:

For more than 70 years, Blank Rome has been committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse work environment.

We are proud of the distinction we received under Alan Hoffman’s leadership and support for achieving a perfect score of 100 percent on the 2016 Corporate Equality Index in recognition of our policies and practices related to LGBT workplace equality.

The firm allegedly stated Zaher was fired because he "lost the confidence of his partners."

Blank Rome employs more than 540 attorneys worldwide and is ranked as the 96th largest law firm in the United States in terms of revenue.

Blank Rome LLP received a perfect score of 100 percent on HRC's 2016 Corporate Equality Index.
