Audra McDonald Bringing Tony-Winning Billie Holiday Show "Lady Day " To HBO

Theater queens have an extra present under the tree as HBO revealed it will air a live performance of  Audra McDonald as Billie Holiday in Lanie Robertson’s musical play Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.

Set in 1959, in a small bar in Philadelphia, Lady Day sees Holiday put on what will be one of her last performances, including songs that made her famous, like “God Bless the Child,” “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” “Strange Fruit” and “Tain’t Nobody’s Biz-ness.”

McDonald won her recordbreaking sixth Tony playing Holiday in Lady Day, a show she calls "one of the most challenging and artistically rewarding experiences of my career." The show’s run at the Circle in the Square Theatre on Broadway was extended four times.

HBO's version of  Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill will be directed by Lonny Price, who also directed the Broadway production, and filmed before a live audience at Café Brasil in New Orleans.

A premiere date has not been announced yet.
