"Avengers: Endgame" Director: An LGBTQ Marvel Superhero Is “100%” Happening
Avengers: Endgame is already setting box office records weeks before it even hits theaters—but fans are already looking to the next phase of Marvel movies, specifically when we can expect to see an openly queer Marvel superhero on the big screen.
At a recent press event in India, Endgame co-director Joe Russo told reporters that a LGTBQ superhero is "100%" coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he added that audiences will see one "very soon."
This adds fuel to the fire of rumors that Marvel is looking to cast an openly gay actor to play an out superhero in The Eternals, Marvel's upcoming feature, set to be released next year.
As NewNowNext previously reported, the studio is searching for an actor, between the ages 30-49, who “physically looks like a superhero” for a lead in the upcoming feature-length movie. Marvel is said to be open to actors of all ethnicity, but would prefer the role to go to an openly gay actor. The Eternals is scheduled to begin filming in the U.K. in September, and run through January of next year.
Marvel’s production chief Victoria Alonso, at the premiere of Captain Marvel in Los Angeles, told Variety it’s time for a gay superhero, and that the world is ready.
“We are going to cast the best Eternals cast that we can, and when we’re ready to announce it, we promise you we will,” said Alonso.
We know one out actor who auditioned for a role in The Eternals: Brian Jordan Alvarez, who revealed to Queerty that he was "very happy" with his recent audition for the Marvel movie. Could he be the first actor to make the jump from Will & Grace to Marvel Comics?
