Baker Refuses To Let His Christianity Stop Him From Baking Wedding Cakes For Gay Couples

"It doesn't bother me one bit or another."

Here's a story that took us a while to wrap our heads around: A baker in Sarasota, Florida, opposes marriage equality but says he'd still bake a wedding cake for a gay couple.

Ron Zammit, owner of Cakes by Ron, describes himself as a Christian and believes marriage is between a man and a woman.

But when a same-sex couple comes to him to design a wedding cake, he takes their order just like anyone else's—and leaves the preaching at church.

"I don't believe that I should judge them for being gay, as well as judging someone for being a certain religion," Zammit, who's been making cakes for nearly 30 years, told ABC 7. "That's not for me to do."

Since same-sex marriage became legal in Florida in January, he estimates he's served somewhere between 20 and 30 gay couples.

"It doesn't bother me one bit or another," says Zammit. "It's a wedding cake, and if they feel like they love each other and want to get married, more power to them."

"As Christians, I think that we should be kind-hearted and show the love of God to people, not to be judging what they're doing," he added.

Given how many bakers, pizza parlors and county clerks seem to think everyone they wait on has to share their religious views, Zammit's perspective sounds almost perverse.

But Sarasota Pride chairman Cindy Barnes says its indicative of Sarasota business owners.

"We are very fortunate to live in a city where they are behind us, supported us from Day 1, and were right with us when gay marriages were passed," she says.

Sure, Zammit is demonstrating true Christianity by welcoming all—but he also knows it's good for business.

"If it's a gay couple's wedding [I'm working on], it makes others comfortable to know they would be accepted to come into a business like this and order a cake together."
