Baltimore, Orlando, Columbus Score 100 From HRC. How Does Your Hometown Rate?
HRC has released its 2014 Municipal Equality Index, a review of how 353 cities across all 50 states treat their LGBT citizens.
This year, 38 cities scored a perfect 100, for which HRC considered, among other factors, workplace-discrimination laws, domestic partner benefits, trans-inclusive health care benefits and anti-bullying programs in schools.
Of the 38 cities that scored a perfect 100, 15 are actually in states that don't have anti-discrimination laws. (Though the cities themselves do.)
Five cities, four of which are in Texas, got a big fat zero from HRC: Lubbock, Irving, Mesquite and McAllen. (The fifth is Southaven, Mississippi.)
"If they want their city to be vibrant and a welcoming environment, they need to do something locally," said Chuck Smith, Executive Director of Equality Texas.
