Bangkok Postpones First Pride Parade In More Than A Decade
Bangkok announced it would be holding a Pride festival for the first time since 2006 this year, but the event is now being postponed due to the death of Thailand's king.
Out BKK, the group responsible for organizing the event, released a statement explaining that Bangkok's Pride would now be pushed back from May to November or December of this year.
"We at OUT BKK are deeply saddened by the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej," the group wrote on the Pride Facebook page. "Therefore, out of respect of the national one year mourning period, and our love for the beloved late king, we will be postponing Bangkok Pride to the end of the year."
Thailand has held Pride events each year in Phuket, but this year marks the first time the festivities will return to the country's capital in 11 years.
Organizers said they want the return of Pride to be less about making money and more focused on promoting visibility and acceptance of the LGBT community.
