Banksy Donates Art to Housing Works Charity

Finishing up his month-long residency on the mean streets of New York City, mysterious street-art personality Banksy has donated a recent piece to the Gramercy Park location of Housing Works. The Banality of the Banality of Evil is a "vandalized" landscape, actually purchased at the shop a month ago—Banksy altered the original work by adding a Nazi soldier, staring solemnly into the distance.

The New York Post is reporting that the painting, which appeared in the window of the charity thrift shop earlier this week, is expected to fetch one million dollars or more at auction. (Bidding is already topping $230,000.) All proceeds will go back to Housing Works, a charity whose mission is "to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS through relentless advocacy, the provision of lifesaving services, and entrepreneurial businesses that sustain our efforts."

Banksy describes the painting on his website as “A thrift store painting vandalized then re-donated to the thrift store.”

"Its incredible that he chose our shop to be part of his 30-day residency here in New York. It was very flattering, " Housing Works director of public relations Rebecca Edmondson told NewNowNext. "The generosity of one artist will help thousands of New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS."

The auction is currently being held at biddingforgood.com.
