Talking Barbie Is Creeping People Out

When you were a little boy, and you were playing with your sister's Barbie, did you ever wish she could look up at you with those wide blue eyes and say,"Why do you only play with me when you're alone? Do you not want the boys in your class who play football at lunch to find out?"

Sorry...where was I? Oh, right, yes. Barbie. Well, now America's favorite doll can talk back to you.

The new Hello Barbie from Mattel "remembers" information it's told and then generates relevant responses that are broadcast from internal speakers.

Creeped out yet? You're not alone.

Susan Linn, executive director at the Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood, sees a darker agenda to the $75 doll: "This is really about Mattel eavesdropping on a child's heart and soul," she tells USA Today. "It's corporate surveillance in the home and exploitation where kids are most vulnerable–around creative play."

Angela Campbell of Georgetown University’s Center on Privacy and Technology warns "this information could be of great value to advertisers and be used to market unfairly to children."

Mattel, which is pushing out Hello Barbie in time for Christmas 2015, denies the accusation.

But when we're all  bowing to our 12-inch plastic overlords , we'll know this is where it all began.
