'Bare': A Lysander Review

Our new web series, Vicky & Lysander, is launching on LOGOTV.com this wednesday, December 19, at 3 pm. And to get you all ready, we asked leading man Lysander to see the new play Bare and review it for us. This is what he gave us.

As Christ loving Christians, Vicky and I  are constantly trying to remind ourselves to hate the sinner, love the sin...wait...reverse that. That saying has never been more applicable than in the new production of the old show BARE at New World Stages.

BARE follows the love story of two teenage boys, Jason (a cool jock and someone I would be friends with) and Peter (a nerdy kid I probably wouldn't be friends with but who has a nice hat). Their love is hidden from their catholic school classmates.  Jason struggles with accepting his sexuality while Peter struggles with how best to pair his knit cap with his “where’s waldo” outfits.  BARE takes on a lot of upbeat subjects like teen pregnancy, gay romance in a religious atmosphere, and drug overdose, but does so with a pop rock beat! Think Britney Spears circa “Email My Heart”. It's like a hardcore episode of iCarly combined with the gravitas of a scary episode of Gossip Girl.

Teenage angst in catholic school and struggling with your sexuality is obviously a difficult situation to be in. What makes it more difficult is that you have Jason’s depressed sister Nadia who sells drugs (although girlfriend has been taking lessons from Taylor Momsen cause she can SING!), Jason’s pushy “beard” named Ivy who vamps it up, an Asian girl named Diane who is busy being Asian, and the school Priest, Father Mike, who is always lurking in the scenery like some lost pedophile. On the plus side there's Sister Joan who reminded me of a less cool and more white version of Sister Mary Clarence but who does a great dream sequence as the Virgin Mary (not the drink, nor a Madonna impersonation of Madonna impersonating Madonna... wait... I’m confused...).

Jason and Peter’s love affair takes place in front of the backdrop of the schools production of Romeo & Juliet (hint) and involves the drug G becoming the new rage in Catholic School (I know I was confused by this as well) which results in love, loss and lessons learned.

Overall the audience seemed to eat it up. Especially the boy/girl that was behind me in the leather vest and leather newsboy cap! He cried and was generous enough to “riff” during intermission for me and any casting directors in the general area.

If you’re in town and missed RENT or SPRING AWAKENING or BARE, the first time it was here, then check it out! BARE plays nightly at New World Stages. For more info go to http://www.baremusicalnyc.com/

Lovingly,

Lysander
