Batman, Flash, Captain America Compete In Winter Olympics, Pussy Riot Arrested Again: At Sochi

Like a lot of you, we've been torn over celebrating the Winter Olympics: On the one hand we don't want to give any legitimacy to Sochi or the Russian government. On the other, we support the Olympics' noble ideals and the hardworking athletes caught in a human-rights controversy not of their making.

Thankfully, artist Francesco Francavilla has given us a way to cheer on the spirit of the Games with original illustrations of Marvel and DC superheroes competing in the Winter Super Olympics. Above, Batman gets in on some downhill skiing, while below, Captain America luge, Flash breaks the sound barrier in speedskating and the Silver Surfer does an Ollie off Galactus' face.

We'd like to think if Cap was at Sochi, he'd speak out on behalf of Russia's LGBT community.

“I’ve been called an aggressive something dyke or something, but I thought it was pretty funny," The 21-year-old Australian snowboarder told reporters. "This one guy said, ‘I’m right behind Putin, you should break a leg and get locked in the slammer’—The hate is funny.”

Well, we're glad you have a sense of humor about these things, Belle, but keep your wits about you. There are some messed-up people out there.

Before the Games began, Brockhoff told BBC Sport her parents were “so worried” about her competing in Sochi. But she insisted  “I want to go there because I’m not afraid of these laws and I want others that live in Russia, who are homosexuals, to see that.”

The Associated Press is reporting that two members of the punk band Pussy Riot were detained Tuesday in downtown Sochi.

LGBT activist Semyon Simonov claims he was with Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, two of almost a dozen women who comprise the punk-rock collective, when they were accused of theft and arrested, along with several other activists.

Tolokonnikova maintains the group was in Sochi to perform their song, "Putin Will Teach You to Love the Motherland," and says police of used excessive force during the arrest. Before eventually being released without charge, she also livetweeted the incident.

Luxuria stood outside the public entrance to the Games, wearing a skirt and waiving a rainbow-colored umbrella as spectators on their way to Saturday's U.S.-Russia hockey game stopped and took pictures. "I have come here with a rainbow flag because a man named Vladimir Putin is homophobic," she said Saturday. "I just have the courage and I think it is important to stand here for people who are LGBT or transgendered and Russian at the same time."

Though Luxuria has since been released, the Italian foreign ministry says it is investigating.
