"Batman V Superman" Star Ezra Miller: "I'm Glad To Have Identified As Queer"

Ezra Miller turned heads in indie fare like We Need to Talk About Kevin and Perks of Being A Wallflower. But he recently  sat down with i-D to talk about his transition into superhero superstardom as the Flash in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and an upcoming standalone movie.

He might be entering the action franchise universe, but Miller's a hippie at heart: a pot-smoking, sexuality-bending 22-year-old who was always on the outside looking in.

"I got kicked out of Buck's Rock [a summer camp for theater kids] for smoking weed," he recalls. "I was the weird, punk kid. A lot of people thought I was a girl; I had pink hair and wore aviator glasses."

Describing why acting is so appealing, Miller talks about the joy of transformation: "Ultimately it's exciting for a human being to realize that who they are extends beyond the confines of the identity they've been assigned."

It turns out Miller isn't particularly interested in living a confined life, in or out of character.

After he came out as queer in Out magazine, the press has tried to label his sexuality, something he steadily resists.

"Even though I said that most of my partners had been women, [it was] immediately: 'gay actor Ezra Miller.' When I identify as queer, it simply means that I don't wish to conform to the binary system when it comes to who and how we love."

Miller, who next appears in both Trainwreck and an adaptation of Madame Bovary, says he's glad he declared his queerness. "First of all because it's true. And, ultimately, I think when we are creating the identity that we present to the world, if it can be close to the identity we actually maintain in our personal lives, [it] will probably end up being more comfortable and sustainable."

Amen to that.
