BBC News Announces First LGBT News Correspondent

Ben Hunte will start his new role in early 2019.

BBC News is making headlines of its own. The news organization announced it has hired Ben Hunte as its first LGBT News correspondent.

Hunte is not a new member of the BBC family. This past summer he became the official presenter of BBC What's New ('Newsround Africa'), which was the BBC’s first television program for children in Africa. He also played a large role in the BBC's Gay Britannia, a series of programming marking the 50th anniversary of The Sexual Offenses Act 1967, which partially decriminalized gay sex. He also hosts a series of LGBTQ-themed radio shows on BBC Radio 4.

“I’m delighted to be taking on this important new role for BBC News and I am looking forward to finding and telling stories from the LGBT community," Hunte said in a statement.

The BBC said the new role "will report on the stories, issues and debates surrounding sexuality and gender and focus on providing insight and analysis on matters affecting the LGBT community in the UK."

Hunte will begin reporting for BBC News as the LGBT Correspondent in early 2019.
