Joseph R. Biden III, the former attorney general of Delaware and the eldest son of Vice President Joe Biden died of brain cancer on Saturday.

Known as Beau, he was 46.

“It is with broken hearts that Hallie, Hunter, Ashley, Jill and I announce the passing of our husband, brother and son, Beau, after he battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life,” the vice president said in a statement.

“In the words of the Biden family: Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known.”

Prior to his death, Beau was receiving treatment at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in DC

In 2010, Beau suffered a mild stroke—two years later, doctors removed a small lesion from his brain.

Beau Biden served as Deleware's Attorney General for two terms, and was planning on running for governor in 2016. He was still planning to run as recently as February, but his health declined in recent weeks and he was admitted to Walter Reed this month.

In 2008, Biden, who also served in the Iraq War, introduced his father at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

“For all that Beau Biden achieved in his life, nothing made him prouder, nothing made him happier, nothing claimed a fuller focus of his love and devotion than his family,” President Obama said in a statement. “Just like his dad.”

His death is the second tragedy for the Biden family: In 1972, the vice president' first wife, Neilia, and their 13-month-old daughter, Naomi, were killed in a car accident. Beau Biden and his brother, Hunter, were also injured in the crash.
