A Freddie Mercury biopic has been in the works for some time now. Origianlly Sacha Baron Cohen was slated to play the role. But Cohen dropped out, much to the relief of Queen drummer Roger Taylor, who in an appearance on BBC’s One Show explained that the band felt that the Borat and Bruno actor’s presence in the movie would be distracting.
“The man who plays Freddie; you have to really believe is Freddie. And we didn’t that could really happen with Sacha.”
When asked who should play the legendary Queen front man who died of AIDS complications in 1991, Taylor hinted that the surviving band members wanted an actor with the initials “BW”
When asked if he meant Ben Whishaw he said, “Well, we hope so.”
We hope so too. Sacha Baron Cohen might have been a better physical match, but Ben Whishaw (who played James Bond’s adorable new “Q” in Skyfall) is a particular favorite around here. Even more so now that he’s officially out.
