Benedict Cumberbatch: I'm Glad There's No Gay Sex In "The Imitation Game"

Benedict Cumberbatch is starring in the upcoming biopic The Imitation Game, about British mathematician Alan Turing, who was essential in cracking Nazi code in WWII, but who was persecuted for his homosexuality afterward.

In an interview with The Wrap, Cumberbatch explains that while the film deals with the homophobia Turing faced, there are no depictions of gay sex.

"He's chemically castrated because he admits to being a homosexual; he talks about entreating a young man to touch his penis. I mean, it's pretty explicit," he said. "If you need to see [sex] to understand that he's gay, then all is lost for any kind of subtle storytelling. The conversations are so naked in themselves that the idea of having to see two naked men wasn't something I ever thought was missing in the script."

The actor added that the film was "not an exploration of someone's sex life," and that director Morten Tyldum made a "very conscious choice" to not show any sex scenes featuring Cumberbatch as Turing. '[It was] just one part of the character that [he] wanted to reveal."

The Imitation Game comes to theaters on November 21
