Sanders, Harris, and Booker Campaigned at an Anti-Gay Church

The pastor has said gay people are sinners who go to hell.

Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, and Cory Booker have all made stops at a Baptist church in Las Vegas whose pastor has said gay people are sinners who go to hell.

According to The Mercury News, Sanders held a town hall at Rev. Robert E. Fowler Sr.’s Victory Missionary Baptist Church last month, and Harris and Booker both attended services there this past weekend. It is unclear whether the candidates knew about Fowler's anti-LGBTQ beliefs, but he has been public about them for some time.

As earlier as 2013, during a radio interview Fowler listed homosexuality among a litany of "sins," alongside adultery and molesting children. He reiterated those views to the Bay Area News Group on Sunday.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford and Assemblyman Jason Frierson, both Democrats, have also been criticized in the past for attending the church.

Melissa Michelson, a Menlo College political science professor, told The Mercury News the candidates were walking "a tough line," attempting to reach out to congregants, including those who might not share the views of their pastor, while also not wanting to give the impression"that that sort of language isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker."

Of the three candidates, only Harris responded to a request for comment, her campaign saying her "support and advocacy for LGBTQ equality has been unwavering throughout her career. She will continue to visit houses of worship across the country to address congregants about the pressing issues we face as a nation."
