Bette Midler Criticizes Oscar Nominations and Suggests an All-Women Alternative

She even has a clever name picked out for the proposed awards show.

The 2020 Oscars nominations were unveiled this week and people have thoughts and feelings about it, to say the least.

In particular, there is upset over what many are calling a snub of female directors in a year of heralded works helmed by talented women, like Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, Marielle Heller's A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Lulu Wang's The Farewell, Melina Matsoukas' Queen & Slim, and Lorene Scafaria's Hustlers.

This is the second year in a row without a single female among the Best Director nominees.

Among those unhappy with the situation is the one-and-only Bette Midler, who suggested perhaps it was time to launch a female-only alternative to the Academy Awards, which could be called the "Osc-hers," and would, she guaranteed, be "way better organized and way more entertaining!"

Midler has twice been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category: in 1980, for The Rose, and in 1992, for For the Boys.
