This "Bewitched" Twitter Thread About Endora's Caftans Is Pure Magic

"Caftan. Gloves. Diamonds. Endora came to slay!"

Bewitched is often claimed as an early favorite of gay men, who cite Samantha's having to hide her "secret" as a metaphor for their own burgeoning sexuality. But the show was filled with camp treasures, from groovy Serena and gay Darren Dick Sargent to nosy neighbor Gladys Kravitz and fey Uncle Arthur.

But perhaps the queerest thing about Bewitched was Endora, Samantha's domineering and disapproving sorceress mother, played by the inimitable Agnes Moorehead.

Imagine if Karen Walker and Morgan Le Fay had a love child who wore electric-blue eyeshadow. Endora's personal style was beyond beyond and helped solidify the character as a sitcom legend.

Bewitched's costumer designers, Vi Alford and Byron Munson, put Moorehead in a dizzying array of caftans. The effect both drew attention toward her body and made it look like she was a disembodied head floating above a sea of psychedelic colors.

Now one fan is saluting Endora and her iconic caftans. Writer Kendra James has devoted a lengthy Twitter chain to the shapeless garb worn by Moorehead over the show's eight seasons on ABC.

And it's a rabbit hole well worth falling down.

Moorehead was actually the subject of longstanding lesbian rumors—co-star Paul Lynde called her "one of the all-time Hollywood dykes"—so reclaiming her as a fashion icon is all more delicious.

I mean.

Flawless.

If you think we're not still feeling the effects of Endora's caftanmania today, may we point you toward Exhibit A?
