The Biden-Harris transition team has named the administration's first openly LGBTQ senior staffer: Carlos Elizondo, who will serve as White House social secretary.

As MetroWeekly reports, Elizondo was tapped for the position earlier this week. The Texas native and out gay man is an event planner who lives in Washington, D.C., with his partner. During the Obama administration, Elizondo previously served as social secretary for Joe Biden, who was Vice President at the time. His role included scheduling, planning, and executing all events hosted by Biden or his family members, including visits with celebrities, other U.S. politicians, and foreign leaders.

In a media statement, Biden highlighted the diversity of his senior staff appointees, Elizondo included.

"Their dedication to overcoming the challenges facing our country today are rooted in their diverse backgrounds and experiences," the President-Elect said. "They will serve the American people and help build back better, creating a more just, equitable, and united nation."

Biden's transition team is staying true to the Democrat's word that he would appoint the most diverse, LGBTQ-inclusive White House staff in U.S. history. As NewNowNext previously reported, the chief of staff to Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris is Karine Jean-Pierre, an out lesbian — and a reported contender for Biden's press secretary. Former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, who is also openly gay, is expected to be appointed to a position in the administration, too.

The Biden-Harris transition team also includes Shawn Skelly, a U.S. Navy veteran and proud trans woman. Skelly was named earlier this month to the team's Department of Defense agency review board.
