“The Big Sick” Original Script Featured A “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Running Joke

"It's all part of my attempts to write RuPaul into everything I do."

The romantic comedy, The Big Sick, is one of the breakout hits at the summer box office. The Judd Apatow-produced movie starring Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kasan is based on the real life relationship between Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, who co-wrote the script with Nanjiani.

Recently on Twitter Gordon revealed that the original script for the film featured a running joke about RuPaul’s Drag Race:

“At one point in The Big Sick script, Emily shows Kumail RuPaul’s Drag Race and it’s a running convo between them,” wrote Gordon. “Cut for length, still in my heart.”

Gordon joked that it was her attempt to write RuPaul into everything she does (who can blame her). Before you start a petition to get these scenes as part of the Blu-ray deleted scenes, Gordon sadly reminds her followers that the scenes were only written and never filmed.

Gordon has been a fan of RuPaul and Drag Race for years, even writing an article for XOjane about the best lessons women can take away from the reality series, and how Drag Race helped her personally:

“Drag queens have helped me embrace my own womanhood and take it to another level, and I am forever grateful to Ru, and to every boy who ever put on a wig and contouring makeup. And finally, in the words of RuPaul, if you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love somebody else. Can I get an amen?”

Obviously, her love of Drag Race needs to be in a future project. Thankfully, someone on twitter had a great idea:

RuPaul cameo in The Big Sick 2?

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9: RuVealed airs Thursdays at 8/7c on Logo.

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
