"Birds of Prey" Film Could Feature DC Universe's First Onscreen Queer Character

In the comics, Renee Montoya is a Gotham City Police detective—and an out lesbian.

A lesbian character could become the first queer lead in a DC Universe film, reports The Wrap.

Birds of Prey, the next film on the docket from Warner Bros. and DC Films, will star actress Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. (Robbie will be reprising her role from 2016's Suicide Squad.) Now, four female characters from the comics are slated to join her ranks: Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya.

In the comics, Montoya, a Gotham City Police detective, is a lesbian, leading fans to speculate whether Warner Bros. will include her sexuality in the film. She doesn't have any superpowers, though she did don a disguise as the enigmatic Question for a brief stint.

If the production company sticks to the canon, Montoya could become the first openly queer character to appear in a DC Universe film.

DC could beat its rival, Marvel, to that milestone, too. Though Marvel included canon bisexual hero Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) in 2017's Thor: Ragnakor, her sexuality was never explicitly addressed.

Birds of Prey is currently in pre-production, with filming scheduled to begin in January 2019. Filmmaker Cathy Yan, known for her debut feature film and Sundance hit Dead Pigs, will direct.
